From the globally-recognized personal finance educator and social media star behind Her First $100K, an inclusive guide to all things money — from managing debt to investing and voting with your dollars
Tori Dunlap was always good with money. As a kid, she watched her prudent parents balance their checkbook every month and learned to save for musical tickets by gathering pennies in an Altoids tin. But she quickly discovered that her experience with money was pretty unusual, especially among her female friends.
It wasn’t our fault. Investigating this financial literacy and wealth gap, Tori found that girls are significantly less likely to receive a holistic financial education; we’re taught to restrain our spending, while boys are taught about investing and rewarded for pursuing wealth. In adulthood, women are hounded by the unfounded stereotype of the frivolous spenders whose lattes are to blame for the wealth gap. And when something like, say, a global pandemic happens, we’re the first to have jobs cut and the last to re-enter the workforce. It’s no wonder money is a source of anxiety and a barrier to equality for so many of us.
But what if money didn’t mean restriction, and instead, choice? The ability to luxuriously travel, quit toxic jobs, donate to important organizations, retire early? The freedom to live the life you want, and change the world while you do it?
Tori founded Her First $100K to teach women to overcome the unique obstacles standing in the way of their financial freedom. In Financial Feminist, she distills the principles of her shame- and judgment-free approach to paying off debt, figuring out your value categories to spend mindfully, saving money without monk-like deprivation, and investing in order to spend your retirement tanning in Tulum.
Featuring journaling prompts, deep-dives into the invisible aspects of the financial landscape, and interviews with experts on everything money — from predatory credit card companies to the racial wealth gap and voting with your dollars — Financial Feminist is the ultimate guide to making your money work harder for you (rather than the other way around.)

Amazing read for any woman looking to increase her financial knowledge!
This book was packed full of great information while also being wildly entertaining. Before reading this book I did not know that HYSA existed (Yes really!), this book also taught me a lot about investing, negotiating, saving, and more. I now have a HYSA in place as well as a Roth IRA AND I could confidently explain what both of those are to you. This book also provided me a lot of comfort, the statistics showed me I am doing a lot better than I thought I was. Plus just having someone acknowledge that your income is not 100% up to you really made me breathe a sigh of relief, I canât tell you how many times Iâve heard someone say âJust work harderâ as genuine financial advice. I seriously am so thankful to Tori for writing this and sharing it with us! Long story short every woman I know will be getting this book as a birthday present this year. Thank you Tori!!

Simple, Actionable â $$ Confidence Booster
if youâre seeking a simple, actionable step-by-step guide to building financial stability, this is it. itâs the first finance book iâve read (one of many) that provided a clear path forward. though itâs money advice youâve likely heard, toriâs telling provides CONFIDENCE & clarity, both of which are invaluable.while i appreciated her perspective on uplifting females as a whole, i donât think thatâs where the book shines. for me, the value came from the homework assignments + how succinct & clear the financial advice was. i now know exactly how to move forward â assured i have a PLAN that will take me to where i want to be â something iâve never been able to confidently devise before due to confusing, conflicting financial advice. thank you, tori! i wish i had this information years ago.iâll be gifting this book to friends in the spirit of wanting my loved ones (men included!) to feel more confident, secure, & wise when it comes to building financial stability in a doable way.

Perfect Book for the Current Times – and for the ladiessss
This book is great for people wanting to change their lifestyles around but aren’t sure where to start. The information is presented in a way that works for young people or older people, and people who have some financial savvy or those with none. Since I have started it, it has made me realize a lot about myself and also open up to talking to others about money. I’m retired military from a rural area in the South, and I still work with a lot of military people.I am going to be buying this book for so many others! A lot of us grew up and no one really discussed money or plans or how to handle adult stuff like this. The mindset of the author is so good, and she is active across social media as well. I think where other financial advisors may have missed the mark, this one is perfect for a variety of people. It is focused on females, but if you can open your mind it would work for anyone.

Truly a breakthrough book sparing no punches, Must read for women tired of financial BS
This book has truly changed my life. Iâve read many financial books written by men, but only a handful by women. Growing up in a challenging family dynamic with a single mom, I vividly remember sitting at the kitchen table, watching her struggle to pay bills with money we never seemed to have. That memory has woven itself into every aspect of my life, not just finances. This book helped me understand that pattern and, instead of plowing ahead and repeating mistakes, I can now move forward with awareness. Iâve also shed the guilt around spending money on essentials that simply come with being a womanâtampons, razors, makeup, lotionâall the things men rarely think about. She revealed the cost expectations placed on women, especially in professional settings, in a way that felt like a weight lifted. She is incredible. Iâm now working toward financial independence with open eyes and a lighter heart. Thank you.

Excellent articulation of money in today’s world
The money advice is solid and accessible but also I like the social interpretation of how and why money acts like it does in modern American/western economies. The tone is definitely geared to millenial and Gen Z readers.

This is a Absolute MUST NEED book for woman of any age on how to work with their finances.
I will say that I am learning so much from this book. Tori is a millionaire who tells us how she got where she is and how she did it. She really goes into detail about the misconceptions and misinformation drilled into women by the patriarchal society. By sharing the misinfo that is fed to most women from birth, she explains how to educate ourselves to have a healthier financial life. It is called Financial Feminist for a reason and I am so very grateful to her for her long hours of research to bring this book to life.I have read other comments that states that Tori is not qualified to have written a book such as this.I am calling bullshit on that!!I am so very grateful for her book and have learned so much about what I do not know and questions I had no idea to ask.In the past, I have listened to “Financial Gurus” who literally would hit the “shame” button for a person’s ingorance. Seriously! And, what is so much worse about these “gurus” is that these people came to them for education on their finances and left feeling humiliated. (From my perspective)These other “gurus” have given advice that is not practical for actual living. It makes me wonder if those “gurus” actually follow their own advice or have lived at least one year on a income that reflects what they are telling others in that income bracket to do.It really seems that the “gurus” have “ostriched” themselves in their tax bracket and are unable to help those who are not in the same income status.Tori was there and earned her way to where she is and STILL has the ability to connect with those working their way up and out of debt.I am really thrilled to actually have this knowledge to better my life and other women in my surroundings by sharing this book with them.

I wrote a longer review on my blog (secondbrainblog) but here is the tl;dr – Tori Dunlap guides us through emotions around money, building a healthy relationship with finances without shame, and provides actionable steps toward financial freedomâalso smashing the patriarchy in the process.

I’ve read many finance books, including one or two that are mentioned in this one. They were difficult to get through if not for my burning desire to be better with money. At first, I was skeptical: 1) I didn’t feel like I needed a feminist financial book, and 2) at 57, I’m a tad older than Tori’s target audience of millennials. With humour, compassion and attitude, this book reminded me why I was struggling with finances so that I could take a fresh look at where I was and feel proud of what I have accomplished despite the challenges brought on by history and even current biases.I read the whole thing, then went back, chapter by chapter and began implementing her recommendations. By the end of the book, I expect that I’ll be talking to Tori in my head as if she were my best friend. She’s real, likable, and fierce. I’d like to thank her parents too, maybe they should write a book on raising financially savvy children/grandchildren. :)Great book.
